Entangled History as a perspective for non-formal education

Die Anmeldung zu dieser Veranstaltung ist abgeschlossen
“Entangled History as a perspective for non-formal education” is an international training course where you will meet people from Germany, Greece, and Poland interested in Holocaust education as well as learn new approaches and methods in non-formal education.

The training course focuses on Holocaust education and the entangled history approach (also known as histoire croisée). In short, this approach allows you to examine historical events from multiple perspectives rather than from a national point of view. It is based on the assumption that events are interdependent and entangled, and their reception may vary across several dimensions (e.g. time, space, actors). Thus entangled history considers as many perspectives as possible (national, individual, scientific, historical, contemporary etc.) and requires a constant reflection of one’s own point of view.
You can learn more about the approach in the handbook we published as an element of one of the previous project’s editions.

The event starts in Krzyżowa, Poland, and on the fifth day, a shuttle bus will take the participants to Auschwitz/Oświęcim to continue the programme. It is a unique opportunity to explore the educational potential of both historical places in the context of the entangled history approach during one training course.

During the training course, you will learn how to:

  • use, develop and modify methods that can be applied in international youth meetings planned for 2022 in Poland and Greece (as a part of the whole “Entangled history” project) as well as in your  everyday work with young people,
  • bring together different perspectives on the same historical event,
  • use one’s own family history to develop personal connections to this kind of topic,
  • reflect critically upon historical education,
  • develop critical thinking and grow awareness of the existence of more than one historical truth.

The training course is for you, if you:

  • are an educator (or want to be one) with experience in youth work, Holocaust education, civic education or history projects,
  • work with young people (or want to do it),
  • want to develop your teaching skills by learning new methods and approaches,
  • are at least 18 years old,
  • live in Germany, Greece or Poland (citizenship doesn’t matter),
  • speak English good enough to actively take part in the event.
